With regular afternoon glass off conditions occurring within the gulf, many have taken the opportunity to hit the water for a pleasant few hours fishing before sunset.
As such the reports have been flooding in of some great captures within the area. The marina has produced a number of coral trout for a few dedicated anglers happy to sit on the break walls soaking a bait. Queenies have also been spotted within the area harassing bait schools, occasionally sending hardy-heads showering as they make their lightning fast attacks. Small, sinking hard-bodied lures are a great option to cast amongst this kind of feeding activity with the queenies often mistaking your offering for an injured, sinking baitfish.
Further south of the marina around Learmonth jetty, the whiting have been present. A number of stories are being told of fish captured measuring well over the 30cm mark so it could well be worth the trip down to catch a feed.
Further offshore sailfish have been spotted free jumping in the waters surrounding town although stories of anglers targeting and catching them are yet to emerge.
The great run of spanish mackerel appears to have slowed a little for the moment but a few are still getting caught north of the Cape along with longtail tuna and some thumping mack tuna.
Ross Lawrence, a young land based angler, who for the past few years has been travelling to Exmouth caught his very first Spanish mackerel on fly this week from an undisclosed beach on the western side of the peninsula. Ross said “the bait was spread in a long line along the shore break until the mackerel starting herding them into a tight ball”. It was at this point Ross cast in his small, hand tied white fly and hooked up solid to the mackerel.
Another angler who has travelled to Exmouth for a number of years is Trevor Earle and his wife Rose. Trevor, who is pictured this week holding a 73cm cod has entered the monthly Exmouth photo competition with his proud capture. The photo competition runs over the duration of the year where anyone can submit a picture of their capture along with a $5 entry fee and go in the draw for monthly prizes as well as an annual prize consisting of $700 worth of Shimano equipment. Entries can be submitted at Bluewater Tackleworld on Maley Street in Exmouth.
