Recently there was an interesting catch for Exmouth.  This year has been very different for fishing right up and down the coast with warm waters pushing south and taking with it many northern species.  We often have people come in to ask if we get the southern mulloway or northern black-jewfish here.  This is one species we have rarely seen in the waters around Exmouth. However, Peter Hillman caught the one pictured this week close to Eva Island in the Exmouth Gulf. Peter has entered it in the monthly competition and there has been a wide variety of catches this month.

Mitchell and Kaitlin Williams from Exmouth have entered with a spangled emperor and bluebone.  The photos are brilliant, capturing some great colours on the fish and big smiles on the kids.  Brothers Lane and Reid Berry from Dianella entered last year and returned for a holiday this year and entered a queenfish.  We also have a red emperor weighing 13kg and a large Spanish mack, a record breaking marlin and a few days left to go!

This month the winner will be judged by Shimano representatives as they come to Exmouth for a fish themselves!

Wahoo have been prevalent in the waters off the Muiron islands. We’ve also had reports of mackerel in waters up to 80m.  It’s not often that mackerel are found in such depths, although last year when the whales arrived we had a film crew out on the water and the amount of mackerel seen jumping in to the air was incredible.  There were around 20 seen jumping vertically by the whole crew onboard in waters from 20m-150m deep.  It was strange, but who knows why they were doing this in such numbers on that day?  The whales have come in early this year and it’s a good time to remind boat skippers to watch out for the whales while on the water.

I’ve commented a few times in the report this year about the blue swimmer crabs.  Another interesting occurrence this year is the amount of barnacles on the crabs. Some crabs have also had a green moss-like growth on their backs, as if they have been in the water for some time.  If you know why this happens, then please let us know?  We like to learn and help others to learn something new every day! We also like to get your reports for the paper, so drop in to Bluewater Tackle World Exmouth on Maley Street or drop us a line exmouth@bluewater.net.au
