Joel Baskerville and his family are up from Perth and have been fishing in the marina. He caught a 35cm bream using a floating mulie. He also caught queenfish and has been having a fabulous holiday. The marina has been quite productive though the holidays and baits such as mulie, and prawns work well there, while small soft plastics in the 2.25inch size have also worked.

Young Zacchary Niikkula had a ‘fishing birthday party’ last week when he turned seven. Zac and around a dozen of his mates rigged up along the marina wall infront of his Dad’s house to try and catch some fish for the party. Several parents were standing by helping tie knots, rig baits and land fish while the kids had a ball fishing. The weather was a little ominous, but that didn’t stop the fish biting. The kids caught diamond trevally, small spangled emperor, sand bass, brassy trevally, bream and the cod pictured this week, proudly held by the birthday boy.  All fish were released and the party was one to remember as each child got to take home the fishing rod provided!

The spanish mackerel have been showing up in high numbers in the gulf this week, while the wahoo have been thick around the west side, particularly near north and south passage at Tantabiddi. Some anglers have caught them while trolling hard bodied lures, such as the Halco 2m laser pro in pilchard or red head colour, or the Bolt in pearl colour.  Other anglers have been reef fishing and berleying, while having a floating mulie astern on a baitrunner reel and have had mackerel cruise up to the berley trail and snavel the whole bait. It is best not to use fresh fish in any berley trail, as that will attract sharks. A good berley trail of mulies, fish oil and baitmate pellets works well.

The Ultra-light fishing tournament will be on in August, thanks to the Exmouth Game Fishing Club. This event is great for juniors and women in particular, with 1-6kg line classes. This event is not about big tough blokes, heavy braided line and muscle: it takes patience, skill and a bit of finesse to catch fish on light line and you can find further details on the competition at www.egfc.com.au
