Red head crazy deep Halco’s have been working well on coral trout according to visiting junior anglers Dillan and Thomas Poole from Willetton. The chrome pink 2m deep laser pros were working well on the mackerel too and the two boys are pictured this week with their great catches and their uncle Scott Blanchard. It certainly is worthwhile getting the deep diving lures trolling for species like coral trout, which are inquisitive fish that like to attack visitors coming into their territory such as a deep diving lure.  The coral trout caught by this crew this week were in the gulf, while others have reported trout on the west side as well.

The weather had been rather hot and sticky, but relatively good for fishing and boating up until the cyclone hit on Australia Day…and boy did it hit hard! There were many people caught out by the sudden blast of a squall that came across the gulf. Most people were enjoying the sunny calm day just relaxing, and some boats were even out fishing when it came over black and fast from the east.  The storm hit hard with incredible amounts of lightning, extremely strong gusts of wind and hideous rain. However, it was all over in no time as the squall passed and clouds cleared a little. It was then the most glorious and longest sunset I have ever seen here. It did rain a little more for the next 12hrs, but surprisingly, when we went for a walk along the beach, there were fish  stirred up in the waters close to shore. Usually the fish go quiet during the ‘firey’ part of a cyclone, but then come out to feed once the barometer starts to rise.  With the fish farm here in Exmouth, it would be interesting to find information on how they behaved during this time. I’ll ask the question and get you some answers in coming weeks.

Are you thinking of fishing the Australian International Billfish Tournament in March? Entries are due now.  It is a three-day tag and release event for billfish. There are sections for juniors, fly-fishing anglers and teams, with prizes including custom built rods, engraved reels and various marine artworks. It is shaping up to be a big event with Gamex that will closely follow. It all starts with a briefing on Monday March 14th followed by a sail past on the first morning in front of the EGFC clubhouse, live entertainment for the whole community on the evening of Friday 18th and educational sessions for anglers and visitors throughout the 2 weeks.
