The Exmouth Game Fishing Club is holding its inaugural Spearfishing competition on 11th and 12th December. The briefing for the comp is on Thursday 9th December at the clubhouse at 6.30pm. The Freediving Fiesta (as it is called) is designed to increase awareness of the positives of Spearfishing including fitness, selectiveness and skill. It is also to help people understand where you can and cannot spear in the waters around Exmouth.
The film crew from ‘Just Add Water’ were here during the week to film for several episodes that will air on the Nine Network during the one-day matches between Australia and England in Summer. Host Mike ‘Thommo’ Thompson brought with him his two sons to do a follow up story from when he fished here with his sons many years ago for a show. During their stay the crew stayed at Wilderness Island and got into some big queenfish, mudcrabs, coral trout and tuna in the gulf. They also headed out in the gulf to get onto some billfish with local boat In Deep.
The two boys have never caught a billfish before and Thommo had only caught a marlin on the same boat for another fishing show two years previously. The crew headed out in the gulf and, much to the delight of the cameraman and whole crew, they managed to get a triple hook-up on sails! They landed all three fish and we can’t wait to see the footage aired on TV in Summer. Thommo will be here for the Australian International Billfish Tournament in March to MC for the event.
Exmouth Game Fishing Club is grateful for the assistance from Thommo and we look forward to seeing him again in March. Shore based anglers targeting spanglies on the west side this week have been rewarded, especially those who are there for the early start. Daylight starts creeping up around 430am! Apparently the hour following this has been prime time for the spanglies. On the eastern side, baitschools are still prevalent along town beach as the sun rises and the queenies and trevally scatter the bait, while terns, seagulls and pelicans have been hanging around to pick up any leftovers.
The Exmouth Game Fishing Club is holding its annual end of year presentation and Christmas party on 18th December. If you are a member, you will need to RSVP asap! This is the first year that it will be held it in the new clubhouse and Santa will be visiting for the special occasion.
