Shaun, Byron, Steve and Butch are up from Perth and are having a competition while on holidays. They walked in to the shop wearing no shirts and Shaun had a wooden spoon around his neck??? Apparently Shaun got the wooden spoon prize for the day for the lowest points scoring after losing rigs, hooking sharks, tangling with others and not catching quality fish. Whoever gets the wooden spoon has to wear the wooden spoon all day and night….so if you have seen a guy dancing on the dancefloor at the Potshot on Friday night, chances are he got the wooden spoon for the day!

Squid have shown up in the gulf this week and they are not small either! So if you’re keen for a fresh feed of calamari for dinner, we’d suggest getting out the light outfits and chasing some squid on the weedbeds. There have even been some along the shoreline in the gulf for those shore-based anglers. As always, there are numerous disputes about which colour works the best, but it can make a good fun afternoon to get out after work and chase the squid with a few mates. In fact the EGFC are looking at having a few fun-sessions on squid in the upcoming months, so keep an eye out for adverts soon.

Last week we spoke about the billfish scene and it has continued to do well with people reporting numerous raised fish on an outing. Pictured this week really is Ben knight with his marlin caught on fly….there was an error in a report a few weeks back in the local paper, that had a shot of an angler with a Wahoo, but the caption of Ben with his marlin.

Are you a keen reef fishing angler? The EGFC are holding a reef-fishing comp in June and entry forms are around town. It is a basic competition that does not require the rules of the game fishing associations and it is designed for anyone who enjoys fishing to get out and show how well they can really fish (and how big those reds they talk about really are??). Of course, there are limits to what you can catch and bring in, so it is not to be a plunder fest…it is designed for a bit of fun and camaraderie. The department of Fisheries will be talking on the briefing night to carefully explain what each angler’s limits are and the organisers are also informing anglers of the purpose of the competition. If you can’t make the competition and want to get down to the clubhouse to see what has been caught, visitors are welcome and details are on the flyer and website www.egfc.com.au.
