In his first two days he has landed some incredible catches including large spangled emperor and the 12kilo golden trevally pictured this week. All the fish were caught from the shore and needless to say, we think Bob has had a ripper start to his stay in Exmouth!
The mackerel have continued to show up just about everywhere, with all sizes being reported. Peter Morse is here with the ‘Boneheads’ flyfishing crew again and he caught a 24kg Spanish mackerel on 10kg tippet- a great catch and possible world record. Make sure you are aware of the legal size limits and different species.
There has been many of the Spanish mackerel also around the 80cm mark and fisheries have reported that people are mistaking them for broad barred mackerel. You don’t want to get fined or embarrassed! There has been a few more blue manners show up in the gulf with the odd mud crab reports as well. Squid has been quiet in the gulf, while anglers using squid have been getting into the trevally in the shallow waters. Black spotted tusk fish, or bluebone have been showing up at dusk south of the marina. Berleying up with premix berley and prawn heads and using prawns for bait seems to work well for these species.
For those of you who missed the meeting on Thursday the 28th of May regarding ruling for fishing within the commonwealth waters of the Ningaloo Marine Park, leaflets are available at the Tackle Shops and Department of Fisheries. Basically as of July 3rd the Commonwealth waters within the Ningaloo Marine Park will fall under the state rules. This will make it much easier for visitors to understand. This is an interim measure until discussions between Department of Fisheries and Department of Environment take place to help collaborate all commonwealth water rulings with marine reserves. If you would like to have further information or some input to this, please do not hesitate to contact either department. Please remember to have all the correct safety equipment onboard you boat including the new epirbs. These are now available after a nationwide shortage over the last few months.
