Winter is almost upon us and haven’t the mornings become crisp? We have had reports of mackerel catches increasing, but the sharks are prevalent in many of the local hotspots. Diane Morris managed to land a Mackie on a Shimano stiffy lure in the green and gold colour. Diane also managed to land her first wahoo on the same lure, while fishing with her partner Matt. In the last two outings on their boat Diane and Matt have seen two whalesharks. Several other anglers have also had the excitement of whalesharks coming up to the stern of the boat.

Pictured this week is Lauren King with a giant herring that was landed out of the boat Immax III. Lauren was fishing with Max off Two Rocks when the fish was caught. These fish are very aerobatic and can be found in the waters of the gulf and around to the tip of the cape at this time of year. They are a great sports fish, but not good eating. They will respond to lures, especially poppers and fly.

Darryl Martin and Jason Gerde from Perth are up here for a week on a fishing holiday. The boys have been absolutely smoked by big fish on poppers at the islands. They hooked everything from mackerel, to GT’s, sharks, brassy trevally to a massive green job fish estimated in excess of 10kg! Needless to say the boys have been stocking up on Owner barbless trebles and split rings to ensure they stay connected for the next day out.

Steve Wilson from Greenwood is also here for a weeks’ holiday. He’s been targeting species on light gear in the marine park using soft plastic smelt gulps. Sandy Bay was his first port of call where he caught a golden trevally. The scenery was simply magic he said and catching a fish was purely a bonus to the escape he had from his usual office down south. Meanwhile from the shore, 3yr old Jack Trudgeon from Mandurah caught 3 dart and a flathead off Janz access road using prawns for bait. He handled the rod and reel all on his own and is keen to get back for more action. Junior angler, 2yr old Jet Worsteling also got out on the water with his father and mother to help film for the IFISH television program. His Dad caught a large queenfish using hardy head bait freshly caught off Bundegi. It was all a bit much for little Jet, who calmly fell asleep through the majority of the episode as the sun set. It all made great television and we will keep you informed on when it will air for all to see.
