Callum Woolaway from Armadale was up in Exmouth holidaying with his Dad who took him to the tackle shop to buy some prawns. Dad said they were going to target bluebone. The father and son drove along Mildura Wreck road and fished the shoreline on the incoming tide. Using his Dad’s reel and new line, Callum caught his first bluebone weighing a whopping 6kg. Callum is pictured this week with his magnificent catch.
Andrew Campbell’s boat, named ‘Apparently’ was fishing south of Tantabiddi targeting billfish with four crew on board The crew caught three black marlin that were estimated at 40, 80 and 200kg in shallow water about 60m off the south passage. They also hooked a spectacular bull dolphin fish that bounced off. They also caught Spanish mackerel to about 10kg, then came inside the reef and caught some spanglies. Needless to say the following day they all had a big sleep in!
Have you seen the advert for Gamex on GWN? Apparently, plenty of people have and we are expecting many new boats for this years’ event. If you haven’t got your entry in yet, please hurry up as numbers for catering are limited. This major event grows each year and new ideas come up every time. For this year, we have marine artist Craig Smith coming to showcase some of his fabulous works. We also have Peter Pakula coming to help us with the rigging night. Fisheries will be here during the whole week doing research and there are two fun-dress-up nights. On the Tuesday night there is prizes awarded for the best dressed team. A lot of boats go out of their way to get matching team shirts and paraphernalia, so the committee thought they’d let the teams show off their gear and award the best for their efforts.
On the last night there is the Pirates of the Norwest Cape Presentation Dinner. Everyone is encouraged to dress up in with a Pirate theme and there will be all sorts treasures for those who have competed well throughout the week. Locals are encouraged to come down to the weigh station each night to see what has been caught for the day. If you would like to attend the presentation night, you must book in advance. For further information, please contact president Jeni Gates on 99491315. Last week a mass of carcasses were dumped on town beach. The fish bins are provided by the council at the cleaning station at the marina for fish carcasses. Many people and their dogs swim at town beach and this is not an area that anyone would like to attract sharks. Please be mindful of this. Sadly, there was a lot of waste with red emperor wings and other parts of fish that could have been used for human consumption. Recreational anglers are more conservation minded these days: sadly, there are a few irresponsible people that ruin this reputation.
